ARGhghaghgahga bart cops!!!

topic posted Sat, February 28, 2004 - 6:26 PM by  cassandra
hey! so a few of us actually showed up yesterday and found we were all alone to face the 7 or 8 cops (we hadnt gone last week when the cookie incident occurred). so a bunch of them stayed with us in the train and said they would take our drums if we kept playing them.. they all switched trains with us in oakland, then even after most of them left these two fuckin guys WOULD NOT LEAVE.. they even followed us out of the station and down the street!! we need to figure out some way to deal with this..

ok, lets give it a week and the cop'll think they won and leave us alone, maybe? or we do the civic center thing where everyone meets there at 6, as was planned before...? eh? eh?

Look. I'm game if we have organization. We need some sort of solidarity, though. Some decided method of dealing with cops. Again, it only works if we have numbers and solidarity.
If party car is to continue, I think it decidedly has to be about resistance. The cops have made it this way.

Organizing means not flaking out, and maybe one meeting's worht of planning?
If anyone has any better ideas, please bring them forward and maybe we can play them out.

i dont think there will be anyway to have a 'policy' towards (not) interacting with the police, since there will be new people and they might have their own ideas about how they feel comfortable acting towards cops.. but if a large enough core of us have a plan for how to deal with it, it will show solidarity.. i think maybe we need to either ignore them completely, or confront them with the issue of them following us when were not doing anything illegal (i only say this because last week it was making me REALLY uncomfortable that the two men were following us around for at least an hour & a half when it was such a small group of us and we werent even doing anything). i would be willing to get together & discuss some ideas on how to make this more FUN and less bad vibes..

    what did i tell you?

despite what everyone's been talking about -- waiting a week, making it a monthly thing, switching to the F line, meeting ahead to time to strategize, and whatnot -- party car is, like, ON, dude, for this friday with a minimal time change.

    <i like party car.
it's not mine. i am not sure where you got that idea from, that partycar is "my thing">

sure, but i'll announce the event, in an authoritative manner, whenever i want to!

dude, i like to party with people that *listen to* and *co-operate* with other people.

lessee, the response will likely be ... "dude, like, you don't have to come."

well, i won't. i haven't been. for the reason i gave above. and given the concerns that many other people have voiced, i suggest you all do not come too. but hey, that's cool if you want to go to a watered-down, hasseled by the cops, disorganized event. doesn't seem like much of a fun party to me.

      who are you talking to?
do you realize this is a computer bulletin board??

party car is a real thing! there's one on friday! just because somebody posted it on the computer bulletin board doesnt mean there was an actual consensus process offline (that means off of a computer)!

people who post bitching about party car and dont even go- well i guess that's entertaining too, nice to have you around! try and go outside the house this friday and come have a party with us on the BART!!!

thanks for your suggestion of "dude stay inside and post on comptuer bulletin boards, dont go out into the real world and have a party" i'm sure that will resonate with lots of people! good luck with that, bro

let's see ... "no one owns party car, it's mine, etc etc" and yet "there was an actual consensus process offline" -- that is, away from this forum, which is some people's only contact with what you've hyped as democratic process, as opposed to the autocratic coterie that it looks like.

let's see "i won't. i haven't been...i suggest you all do not come too." and yet "yo here's an organized plan for this event on friday, come on out if you can!"

i know it's hard to understand that people can help organize party car outside of computers, away from your negative exhortations to not go to the event, but they do, and they flyer too..

please don't interpret my posting of a bulletin board message saying "yo it's on" as owning party car, but to make you feel better i'll put a disclaimer on the bottom of every message:

"nobody owns party car and GORdon would rather you didnt show up, even though he won't be there"

            make it:

"no one owns party car but it's funny how marc uses terms like 'join us' and talks about organizing it -- gordon would rather endorse an event that is led by someone who leads responsively and responsibly, not passive aggressively, and who heeds people's concerns about the event, rather than sarcastically dismissing them, and gordon wonders why anyone would come to an event that by several accounts on this forum has indeed become "watered down," with fewer and fewer people attending, and plagued by cop harrassment"

why are you spending so much time on this? how important is party car to you? if you need a leader, why dont you start your own tribe and elect someone the leader? i'm sure plenty of people will be happy to lead you!! you know, no one is asking me to lead responsively or responsibly, heeding the concerns of this online constituency.. and if they did ask me, i'd say "yo, why don't you lead if you need a leader so much"
like i just did to you..

i posted to the bulletin board trying to get momentum for a spontaneous party, and you responded right away with "FUCK THIS PARTY IT SUCKS", and now any further talking to you is pretty much wasting time that i could spend flyering, drumming up support for the party, whatever..

so i'm putting you on tribe-ignore for a while because it's way too compelling to try and respond to every negative point you make in a logical and compassionate way, but ultimately it's like arguing with republicans- pretty frustrating, slightly entertaining, and right now i need to focus on contributing to a party!!

hope you're still around april 1st because i'd love to see what you have to contribute to this community by then- maybe you'll even have gone to a partycar by then!

i'm sorry that tomorrow's party car doesnt have your endorsement, but ultimately i dont think it will make much of a different in who shows up and who doesn't- the most heavily attended partycars were the ones that were heavily hyped, flyers, forwarded to mailing lists, etc..

and this bulletin board is frequented by a very small number of people who have actually been at the event- supposing to organize them without including them is unrealistic and undesirable for me, so i opt for the self-organizing (affinity group?) model..

i'd also like to suggest to people who report "watered down" and negative party car experiences: it's like burningman, you get what you put into it, and there will always be legions of assholes who say "i'm not going because it's not cool anymore" or even worse "i went to the first three then stopped because it sucks now"-

organizational structure and shittalking of an event have the potential to hinder New People's involvement and contributions.. or encourage. flatly saying "yo don't go to this event", well it's hard to see that as a "concern" that can be "heeded"..

oh shit did i say heeded concerns?
cops concern? changing location and time.
momentum concern? advertising a post-partycar event (matt's art show)
periodic concern? matt's art show is once a month, maybe it will stay attached to that and come down frm weekly partycar..
haters concern? putting gordon on ignore.

you know, i'm trying to understand the mindset of someone who actually aims their energy towards asking people to NOT go to a spontaneous train party..

can't you just forward the party announcement around to your friends and help us all make a kickass event?? that starts at a different time, different location, and has an end goal for it..

and when you say watered down, you mean compared to the lively discussion of this online bulletin board, right? or compared to the posts on this online bulletin board about earlier events which you havent felt like going to yet?

oh also i'd like to point out that i haven't announced the event or even attended one in the past 3 weeks, so i'm callin bullshit on you sucker..

i think when you say you like to party with people that "listen to" and "co-operate" with other people you mean you like to post on bulletin boards with people who are online as much as you, so that they post back and you don't feel lonely.

COME TO PARTY CAR ON FRIDAY! FREE HUGZ!!

hm, so when you don't go but post online -- as with the very helpful "cookies = breaking the law ... partying = not breaking the law!! ... cookiecar!" -- that's cool, but when i do it, it's hypocritical?

as for the rest of your comments, i just posted a reply, threaded just a bit above.

nah when either of us post online it's bullshit- i hope nobody takes either of us seriously because they have better things to do then read my attempts at trying to include you and cater to you when you will never leave your house-- maybe using the board to actually organize or hype shit up or whatever.
          bye!

Christ! It's supposed to be a fucking party! Gordon, stop being angry because you feel like no one's including you. We're TRYING to include you. And just consider 'we' anyone and everyone you meet, anywhere.
Marc, you said your thing, had your much overdue rant, and I'm really glad you're going to be on party car tomorrow. But let go of the negative thing and let's just get on with it.

Both of you guys spend too much time in front of your computers. (Wish I had that kind of time.)
            See you on the BART!
