This is a tribe for the mass transit lovers and haters of our city. A community for those who frequent Muni, BART, Caltrain, and other Bay Area public transportation. We are the supporters of SF Muni/SFMTA. We ride cable cars, even in the rain, well, mostly because they stop for locals usually. We ride buses to work, packed like sardines. We can tell you which bus lines to avoid if you need to steer clear of the mix of beer and urine smells. You’ll find our Muni rants on Craigslist, our heads wrapped around a project like Go Geary BRT or Fix Masonic and our hearts devoted to San Francisco.

Hey Party folx! I've been helping organize this event for next Saturday April 30th, and I'd love to see you all there. Here's the info:

The Really Really FREE Market!
Saturday April 30, 2005 12-4pm at Dolores Park

We would love for you to come and offer your special gifts and talents at this event. Full explanation below.

The RRFM is based on the idea of a gift economy, namely that giving feels good; that if we were to all to share what we had, we wouldn’t have less than we have now, we’d actually all have more than we currently have. Giving is a pleasure in itself. Gift others with your clutter. Gift others with your talents. Gift others with your presence!

Bring *your thing* to the event, whatever that is! Material goods, a
service to provide, a skill you have that you want to teach to others, a performance, or anything else!

The Really, Really Free Market consists of the sum of its participants. The gift you bring to the event, helps create what the event is for others, just as what others bring to the event, creates what the event is for you.

This is not an event for bartering. This is not an event to advertise your company or yourself, leave your businesscards at home! It’s about gifting without the expectation of anything in return, and it's about taking without feeling the need to reciprocate to that individual.

Material goods to give: Books, clothing, odds and ends, etc.; healing
arts: massage, reiki, yoga; circus arts (performing and teaching):
juggling, poi, stilts; sports and games: soccer, frisbee, etc.; bicycle
repair; there will also be a kids' space with facepainting, games, and
more; and of course, food!

We are hoping to make this a regular event in San Francisco. The first Really, Really Free Market is being held on:

Saturday April 30, 2005 from 12-4pm at Dolores Park.

If you like what you just read, get involved! Come to the event! Bring your own gifts to share! Spread the info and get more people involved! This event takes YOU to make it happen!

Please respond with your thoughts, ideas, what you plan on bringing to the event, etc.

See you April 30th!

The BART car we entered was towards the back of the train. There were many bikes in view, we almost chose a different car to enter, but braved the steel spokes and tangled flesh of the populous doorway to find...PartyCar in full swing!!!

It was delerious good fun to be so welcomed and swept up into a mobile art show. Frames were hanging from the handrails, stickers and cardboard signs were strategically deployed, instruments were played, manifestos declaimed.

I'd long been missing something, and realized then that it was the fugitive spontaneity of the PartyCar. It found me! Again! (But am I saved?)

well we ditched the cops! people saw them get on the 5:30 richmond train at 16th/mission and look for the party and stay on the car! luckily because we have such high turnover, they dont know who to look for all the time. we made it to 12th/broadway and back without any freakin pigz.. 20 peeps or so made it, i think.

pizza:
15 of us went to the matt gonzalez art show at city hall afterwards.. lots of free booze and food and art and freaks in a beautiful building- a great way to carry momentum on to another event.. maybe we could do this monthly? next month on the F train?? i know these ideas have been batting around this bulletin board for a while, sounds like people are down with them..

So, yesterday two of us got tickets for eating cookies on the BART. Why did this happen? Because we don't have numbers like we used to. If there are enough of us, the cops won't do anything. It's too much of a hassle for them to bring 30 people down to the station. If there's only 12 of us, they single out a few people to harrass (and it's usually women because male cops think they're easier to intimidate. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I have witnessed.)
Without a large group of people, partycar does not work. The cops win. If we have masses, we win.
If you are truly down for social change in the no-fun zone and would like to do some planning, tribe message me directly with your email and/or phone number and lets make it happen.
I'm ready to run with this but if there's not enough interest, there's just not.
So come forth and be counted if you're in.
Also, it is suggested that anyone who has video or film equipment bring it and tape/film the cops the whole time. Documentation really puts authority in it's place.

here's the skinny... we were slottered this past friday. i was one in a group of five who chose to continue on to richmond. there was a lot we could have changed if we had planned better, but one of the ideas behind party car is not planning. no one runs party car, it isn't based anywhere. party car belongs to anyone who wants it.
i've seen it suggested to change the time and location, but the only thing that has remained the same for every party car was the time and location. it would not be party car if that changed, maybe the cops won this week and maybe they scared party goers enough that next week party car wont be there to great commuters with tubas and applause.
forget politics, forget law enforcement, forget all the "them" against "us". party car is not a tangible group or posession. it is an expression of community and the only thing that holds over one hundred random strangers together. every person who has participated in party car has their own set of motivations visions for coming closer to their fellow human. we all show up expecting to find others waiting to let go and get down.
it's all coming out very flower child, and maybe thats not the feeling i was trying to express...i don't know. i guess i just want to say everyone fucking rocks, get over it. we have come together on many levels based around the spontaneous erruption of fun known as party car, and we should take a moment to think about the impact that had on us, and we on it.

Gecko and I get to the 16th St. Station and there are three or four cops there waiting. For what? Could it be Partycar?
The 5:30 Richmond approaches, out comes mohawk man with the tuba. A small crowd of us rush to get on. So do the cops. The car has been decorated with velvet and maybe some fake fur. There's a plush octopus swinging around.
We are relatively silent, try switching cars, then trains a few times. We get followed. The fuzz has cased us good. They seem to be working on breaking us up. They succeed. Two other partycar goer's and I can't figure out how to reconvene with the rest of the group, so we go back to 16th street and hope our group is there. It's not.
Technology and cell phones put us back into contact with our people, but what now, and what of next week?
What of the right to gather? What of freedom of speech? Is it this easy to shut us up and make us behave? Do we just trudge along dumbly, hang our heads, and do what we're told?
This oppressive authority stance deserves some form of reaction, but I'm not sure what. I mean, we weren't hurting anyone. Those who did not feel like participating had any of nine other cars to choose from. I do not feel that shutting up and sitting on our hands is the correct response. Anyone have any ideas?
This is about freedom.
This is about art.
This is about revolution.

i think this time people should talk about the cops ahead of time. seriously. this is an attempt at a discussion i think we need to have to keep party car from getting shut down: one BART cop ending the party car is just not acceptable - its lame! party car must be able to survive a few cops.

this kind of thing requires that PC people come to at least some level of an understanding about cops and throwing parties like this.

part of this involves letting go of the mentality that when a cop tells you to do something, you have to do it. trust me,
you dont. when you are in a group, you have special powers. so i have tried to detail some of the ways, in my experience,
that these powers are preserved:

some groundrules, for starters, this is not exhaustive or maybe not even coherent, but it will hopefully kick off a discussion. these are groundrules that are usually applicable (again, in my experience) for actions like this:

1) dont try to assume any "roles" the cops want you to play... never try to negotiate with others on behalf of the police or
on their behalf with the police - unless thats been talked about ahead of time.

2) ignore the cops. this is basic resistance. its more than not doing what they say when they say it, its avoiding entering into dialogue, even eye contact, with them at all. believe me, it works! say theres 40 of us and one cop. the cop will try to address the crowd. if this fails, the cop will address individuals. his hope is the individual responds and sets an example for the others. if you ignore them, they move on to the next person. [if they focus on you with physical action, you should comply with an intent to get away from the cops first, and return to the action second. for example, move into the next car, or onto the platform, just far enough to get them to leave you alone, then return to the party car. youll want to watch the group and stay with it, and keep an eye on the cop(s) that physically targetted you.] this rule is also good practice because you dont want to be the one the cops are focusing on - it sucks to be that person!

3) always respond to the cops as a group. if we say something, we chant it as a group.if we move in response, we move as a group. maintain this cohesion, its what gives us these special rights.

4) understand the interaction. its not between you and the cop. its between the cop and the group. not only that, understand the limitations on the interaction....

the cop doesnt know whos in the group and who isnt (notice how only half the car evacuated at ashby? those other folks were part of party car too). the cop also cant arrest everybody (unless he has lots ofbackup). the cop cant evacuate the whole train [moving into adjacent cars is a strategy to explore]. the cop cant keep the train delayed forever (think of the delays
this will cause!) backup takes a LONG time, they dont keep cops in reserve tanks or anything, so its not like a lonely cop can radio in a "release the hounds" call and have 100 cops materialze out of thin air.

5. Cops always lie. What they say is about getting you to do what they want. What they say does not place limits on their actions in anyway, and is usually a tool (their best tool) for getting us to do what they want. This ties in to the limits on their power that I brought up above.

These limitations are positively huge, they positively tie the hands of the cops and free us to act. the cops know this, so they train their people to lie to us. if they cant hold the train forever, they tell us theyll hold the train
forever, until we get off. if they cant arrest us all, theyll threaten to. if they cant identify whos in the group theyll seek out a leader, and once a person like that responds to them and enters into dialogue, theyll use the "leader" as a wedge into pressuring the group.

anyway, folks should chip in on this discussion and talk about holding the party car when/if we are told to get off again.

---------------
The BART station has an air of magic and mischief this Friday afternoon, and friends and I are furtively awaiting our train, the party train, the last car on the 5:30 Richmond. I am dressed for the occasion as Romance the Love Pirate Clown, and as usual, once the nose goes on, I am no longer myself, but another being entirely. The world of the clown overtakes me. Everyone is a friend. Nothing I do is stupid as long as it makes people laugh.
The train pulls up, and a colorful man with a mohawk and red velvet coat leans his sousaphone out the door at the end of the train, playing a fanfare. We break into a run, whooping and hollering as we go.
The car is delightful. Efforts have been made to adjust the harsh lighting by taping green cellophane over the fluorescent light panels. People are dancing. We chant at the stops, urging more commuters to join us. “I say party, you say car! ”
“Party! ”
“Car! ”
“Party! ”
“Car! ”
People thank us for livening their commute. One woman asks us to come back next week. Everyone is having a good time. There is no violence. There is no angry yelling. There are not even any unhappy faces. Approximately 90 happy people, many of us strangers, are crammed into this long, tight space and having a joyous time. We are singing, making music, dancing, passing out flyers and flowers.
Then we get to Berkeley station. The train stops. One BART police officer gets on the train, and suddenly the party stops. Everyone is compliant. All the freaks get off the car and no one is sure what to do. I, of course, am lost in Romance, who only wants to continue on, get on another BART, play ring-around-the-rosie on the platform, something. I am not ready to stop. I am not willing to believe that one man in a uniform with a gun can control 90 people. We are not cattle! We are not sheep! We will not sit back silently and do what you tell us to do! But a lot of us do believe we are farm animals, or so it seems, because suddenly everyone is disbanded. I am arguing with a police officer, trying to use clown logic. When I say that I am not breaking any laws, that I am just being myself, I am told that being myself is illegal. I look around for support, and all but two of my people are gone. But others in the station are listening to what is going on between me and the three police officers that are now surrounding me. Strangely, maybe because I am stuck in character, I am not afraid. I think not about what will happen to me in five minutes, but only about what is happening right now. There are children present in the station. A three year old with latte-colored skin and a knit cap is watching me closely. I smile and wave, make a clown face. Her eyes go big and then she smiles back. I cannot break in front of this child. I cannot let her see that the police can control people and tell us how to act. I continue my dialogue with the police for a moment, then walk over to interact with her. I know I am being watched, but what can I do? A trapped rat in a cage, I am stuck in the BART station in between trains, stuck in a character that does not understand police. Stuck in a character that does not comprehend that she cannot be herself. The character and I come closer to merging all the time.
Gecko walks over to me and says if we don ’t leave, the cops will take me away. He whisks me onto the next train. It is the wrong train, and we have to transfer again at Fruitvale to get home, but at least we are out of there.
Today, I am still angry. I was not drinking in public. I was not drunk. I was not on drugs. I was not acting “lewd ”or hurting anyone, mentally or physically. I was just having fun. I was just expressing myself. I was just doing what I do, making the world a stage. If Shakespeare was correct in his belief that we are all players, then we are all outlaws, too. It is heartwrenching to realize that theatre and street performance are a threat, that you can be easily disappeared for no greater action than just being yourself.
I refuse to be afraid. Let silliness prevail. Children are watching. We must set an example of ridiculousness and play.
Never be afraid.

wed 6pm: after 100 straight viewings of the gold chains video "i come from san francisco" (http://ruben.fm/videos/gc_icome.mov), partycar.tribe.net is started. partycar operatives print up 1000 color flyers. email lists are spammed. within 2 hours there are 50 people in the tribe.
thu 3pm: partycar operatives announce on diamond dave's radio show on KPOO-FM. haight street is flyered.

thu 7pm: 100 something people in the tribe. party car operatives flyer several local events including the gold chains show at bottom of the hill. toph cannot make the party car as he has work at 5:30.

fri 12pm: party car operatives frantically search for musical equipment and supplies. a crappy sound system, a cheap ebay tuba, a water cooler bottle and drum sticks are acquired.

fri 3pm: party car operatives flyer a mission catholic school as school lets out for the day, zeitgeist, and valencia street.

fri 4pm: party car operatives acquire roll of green acetate for the bart lights. 160 people currently members of the tribe.

fri 5pm: party car operatives position themselves with concealed party equipment at 24th/mission. the wait for the 5:27 richmond train is an agonizing one. 6 people on the platform so far.

fri 5:15pm: at 16th/mission, 50 critical mass transiters have gathered, awaiting party car. the 5:18 richmond train comes- the crowd hesitates, seeing the empty car, furtively scoping each other out, wondering when the partycar will happen.

fri 5:27pm: it's on. partycar operatives board at 24th street, with three minutes to deploy musical instruments and decorations. richmond train party car pulling into 16th/mission station.

fri 5:30pm: partycar operatives disembark from the party car into the 16th/mission station. the deafening warbling blast of the partytuba is heard. as one, the entire station screams out "PARTY CAR!!!!!!!!!!!"- 50 people from waaaaaay down the platform stream towards the party car, packing it full of people.

fri 5:35pm: picking up more partiers at civic center and points beyond, the party car is in full effect. partycar operatives visually transform the party car with green acetate sheets over bart lights, costumes, balloons, a sprawling string spider web that trips up the corporate media camerman multiple times, and ad hoc party car signs. at all san francisco stations, people are showing up ready to party. each station is bombarded with partytuba blasts and screams of PARTY CAR!!

fri 5:40pm: the partycar hits the bay tunnel- screams of WHOSE BART? OUR BART! rise up from the throng- dancing, photoblogging, screaming- the balloons become sonic weapons, squeaking and scratching- virtually every surface is used for percussion by hands and drumsticks alike. alcohol, drinks, food are flowing..

fri 5:45pm: the 2nd partycar is boarded at 16th/mission, richmond train. there is a pinata present.

fri 5:47pm: 1st partycar pulls into oakland 12st street station- a small parade of partycar out on the platform, then back onto the train- with group screams of WE ARE! PARTY CAR! the partytuba finds its way into the capable hands of a trombonist, resulting in actually danceable music.

fri 6pm: party car #2 calls party car #1 on a cell phone to ask "where are you guys?!"

fri 610pm: ashby station- the partycar arrived on time but it hasn't left yet- why?? two bart police keep trying to find out who is in charge to tell them "the train isnt leaving the station until we can talk to everyone on the platform". partycar moves to the platform as the bart police plead with whoever to "keep it down to a dull roar", causing an innocent clown to break down into tears.

fri 620pm: party car boards fremont train for macarthur station, to meet up with east bay dodgeball contingent.

there’s even an adult Yahoo group devoted to the subject:

And finally, from SFBG Best of the Bay 1998:
Best Place to Partake of Risky Business
Once upon a time, bicyclists weren't allowed to take their bikes on any but the end car of BART trains and were forced, during rush hour, to get out at Embarcadero station after crossing the bay. In these more probicycle days, there has been a cycle diaspora. But old habits die hard, and the last car on BART tends to be kept clear for the motley crew of more athletic, more energetic, more curious, and more, well, horny commuters. Sometimes if you bother to walk all the way to the end of the platform, you can get a whole car to yourself. And sometimes there might be an equally adventurous fellow traveler who has already found membership in the Mile High Club and now longs to join a more select crew: let us call it the Mile Low Club. If some randy youth gives you the eye as you travel through the tube, give it back. And while discretion is the key, there might be an opportunity for hanky-panky during that long stretch between West Oakland and Embarcadero, as the long, snakelike train plunges headlong into the open hole of the tunnel. Just be ready to zip up fast when you feel the train slowing into the next station. But isn't the possibility of getting caught half the fun?
